Soaking Up Spa Style in Spain

By Betsy Kroll

CAUDALIE, THE 11-YEAR-OLD French skin-care line known for its grape-seed-extract antiaging formula, is expanding its offerings. The company celebrated the opening of its fourth Vinotherapie Spa in grand fashion last month in Rioja, Spain. King Juan Carlos I toured the spa alongside ueber-architect Frank Gehry, who designed the accompanying Marques de Riscal Hotel as a sweeping homage to the local culture. The enormous titanium roof is sculpted in the shape of a flamenco skirt and tinged to match the pink and gold shades of vintage wine bottles. The 15,000-sq.-ft. spa has 14 treatment rooms and features, among other vineyard-inspired treatments, a Wine Barrel Bath. Caudalie co-founder Mathilde Thomas describes the entire visitor experience as "very elaborate, modern and beautiful." For his part, Gehry was particularly taken by the Beauty Elixir spray, a popular Caudalie classic.
