How To Network
In the new book Never Eat Alone: And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time, Keith Ferrazzi and Tahl Raz explain how to create a web of contacts, colleagues, friends and mentors. Some highlights:
BUILD IT BEFORE YOU NEED IT
The day you lose a job isn't the time to start making calls. Lay the groundwork now. Lean on friends, family, alumni groups--anyone who can expand your circle.
MAKE YOURSELF A KNOW-IT-ALL
All new contacts are potential prizes, so before a first meeting, read all you can about them personally--and their firm. A Google of the person's name is a must.
FOLLOW UP--OR FAIL
A postmeeting e-mail keeps you on the radar. Recap your discussion, emphasize what you have to offer, suggest a time to meet again.
