Rise and Shine
By Camilla Morton, Kate Novack
STELLA MCCARTNEY DESIGNER
How long do you need to get ready?
I bathe in the evening to chill out, so in the morning it's jump out of bed, put a warm flannel [washcloth] on my face, brush my teeth, moisturize, dress and leave. I'm one of those quick people, five to 10 minutes.
How do you pick your outfit?
People choose their clothes depending on how they feel. If you feel a bit chubby, you could wear black and try to hide yourself. And say it is a lovely day, and you feel good about yourself, you might wear something skimpy.
Do you have a "uniform"?
If I'm going to wear a suit, I will always wear one of my designs: a single-breasted, one-button, peak-lapel suit with some slightly hipster, low-waist pants.
Is your closet packed with your own collection?
I don't get all my stuff free. It's a business! You can't just say, "Ooh, I'll have the whole shop today in every single color!" I've nicked some of my samples--tops, jeans, trousers, the odd evening dress.
Do you think about the paparazzi when you're getting dressed?
I have only recently started doing it. Now I am a bit more, Hmm, maybe I won't wear that bright pink neon fluffy hat. But other times you just stick your hand in the closet, pull anything out and go, Whatever! --Reported by Camilla Morton

Is your ward-robe like Carrie Bradshaw's?
I'm a far more modest dresser than Carrie!
Do you have a default outfit?
When I'm with my son, I tend to wear T shirts. I have those wonderful C&C T shirts and some jeans. But I think what's easiest is a shift or a dress, and it tends to be black. You always look like a lady. You're above and beyond indictment.
What's your off-duty morning routine?
The only thing I do besides shower and dry my hair is cover my zits, if I have any, and I put on mascara and lip gloss. I have the same perfume I've used for 20 years, Bonne Bell Skin Musk.
Where do you shop?
Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Geminola, which has primarily vintage pieces that have been redyed. I love Kirna Zabete and the vintage store What Comes Around Goes Around. [But] I am not a huge shopper.
Are you as addicted as Carrie is to Manolo Blahnik shoes?
I am guilty of purchasing many more than Carrie [does]. Nothing can compete with the embarrassing amount of money I spend on shoes.
Do you ever look in your closet and not know what to wear?
Yes, just like every other woman in America, there are days when I turn to my husband and say, "Darling, I have nothing to wear."
Is there anything that you've held onto for sentimental reasons?
I have kilts from when I was little. I have a bonnet. I have a satin baseball jacket from Annie.
Do you wear different clothes now that you have a child?
I tend to wear things that I don't care about getting food on. There are days when I'm alone with James Wilke, and I'm not out of my nightgown before 3 in the afternoon. Your own vanity is lower on the food chain.

How do you choose among your 500 pairs of shoes?
They're probably the most difficult thing to select. One day I might want to be whimsical; one day I might want to be practical; one day I might want to be a homegirl.
Where do you keep them all?
I actually had a shoe closet built in my apartment in Manhattan. The whole bedroom was designed around [it]. It's backlighted so they're presented almost like art; they're color coordinated; and they're behind smoke-glass doors.
What time do you wake up?
I wake up naturally--not by alarm--between 6:20 and 6:30. In my bedroom there are four televisions that face the bed, and I put on all the morning shows. I have breakfast in bed almost every morning while I read the newspapers.
How is the wardrobe for The View selected?
One of us sets the color palette for the day. If Joy [Behar] is going to wear a fuchsia top, then we're color coordinated around her. And we have never once in seven years had a disagreement--"Oh, I want to wear red today. Oh, I was planning to do that." Not one time.
What are your morning rituals?
I read my morning Scripture, and every morning while I'm in the car, I call my mom. She goes over what happened on The View, like today she told me she hated my hair yesterday.
So you do have bad-hair days?
Yesterday was the worst ever! So I just curled it up tight at the top, made it into a cute little do and went on. You can't sweat the small stuff.
