DIED. DAVID TOMLINSON, 83, British film actor probably best known for his role as the father in the 1964 classic Mary Poppins; in Buckinghamshire, England.
DIED. ALAN HOVHANESS, 89, prolific and speedy composer who drew on influences ranging from Asian harmonies to whale noises; in Seattle. Among his approximately 500 widely performed pieces were symphonies, operas, ballets and choral works.
DIED. NANCY MARCHAND, 71, versatile, award-winning actress best known for playing a Mob matriarch on the HBO series The Sopranos; after battling lung cancer; in Stratford, Conn. A theatrically trained performer, Marchand garnered acclaim on Broadway and in film, and won four Emmys for her role as a newspaper publisher on the television series Lou Grant. At age 70 she took on the role of Livia Soprano, a scheming but lovable Mafia mom who put out a contract on her son.
