NOW THAT'S HIGHBROW LITERATURE

HarperCollins publisher JUDITH REGAN has cultivated unlikely authors before (neither Howard Stern nor Kathie Lee Gifford is likely to qualify for Modern Language Association membership), but the doyen of the best-seller list may have topped herself with The Eyebrow, a book due out this spring from her own imprint on eyebrow upkeep by...the woman who plucks Regan's eyebrows. "Robyn Cosio changed my life," Regan gushed to Publishers Weekly. "With a swift move of her hand, she reshaped my eyebrows, giving me the instant facelift I needed." Cosio is no pedestrian plucker; she often reshapes 50 brows a day at $50 a pop, and her clients include Courteney Cox and Susan Sarandon. Whether Cosio can write is a mystery, but no doubt Regan's hair colorist and bikini waxer are rooting for her.

HE'S USED TO BETTER MUSIC

BRITNEY SPEARS may be the queen of pop tartiness, but her new video, From the Bottom of My Broken Heart, is an entirely wholesome affair. Oddly, it took an ex-porn auteur to clean up her act. The clip was helmed by Greg Dark, director of such fare as Devil in Miss Jones 5 and Hootermania. Public exposure of the connection between the ex-pornographer and the already-too-precocious teen singer is making both sides nervous. Though Dark has directed more than 20 music videos, his agent says she is worried that dwelling on Dark's past might prevent him from getting future video gigs--the rock world being so notoriously puritanical. Meanwhile, a representative from Spears' record label, Jive, disavowed any prior knowledge of Dark's porn career. Perhaps Dark's video for the band Orgy should have tipped them off.

Phantom Actor

Citing his distaste for "the inauthenticity of movies," LIAM NEESON announced last spring that he was quitting the film business. Ireland's favorite son quickly retracted his statement--Neeson can be found on the silver screen in the dark comedy Gun Shy, opening this Friday--but he seems to have found an acting role that suits him more comfortably: narrator. Neeson lent his husky brogue to the pbs documentary The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization, which airs Feb. 9, and taped a special introduction to the Feb. 13 episode of Touched by an Angel, which focuses on the relations of Irish Catholic and Protestant teens. The capstone to this vocal odyssey comes in March, when Neeson's taped voice will be heard reading the poetry of W.B. Yeats, Arthur O'Shaughnessy and Seamus Heaney while Irish legs are flailing in Riverdance--On Broadway. There's nothing like legitimate theater to recharge an actor's batteries.
