ELECTED. FRANK GRISWOLD III, 59, the conciliatory bishop of Chicago's Episcopalians; as leader of the Episcopal Church; in Philadelphia.

CONVICTED. VINCENT GIGANTE, 69, a.k.a. "the Chin," bizarrely inventive Mob boss who tried to elude prosecution by claiming insanity, often roaming the streets in a bathrobe; of racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder; in New York City. He was acquitted on seven counts of murder.

SENTENCED. ALEX KELLY, 30, former high school jock who spent eight years on the lam in Europe; to 20 years in prison, with the last four years suspended, for a 1986 rape; in Stamford, Conn.

DIED. ALF ENGEN, 88, king of downhill skiing, who excelled on the slopes as a jumper, coach and entrepreneur; in Salt Lake City, Utah.

DIED. DORA MAAR, 89, Pablo Picasso's muse whose relationship with the painter inspired such works as Weeping Woman, 1937; in Paris.
