SPIRO AGNEW BUSTED AT LAST
At least the marble was unblemished. Twenty-two years after he resigned the vice presidency in disgrace, having pleaded no contest to tax-evasion charges, SPIRO AGNEW finally had his graven image added to the Capitol's gallery of Vice Presidents. Richard Nixon's onetime right-hand man was pleased with the honor-and with the likeness, which he said captured what "pundits" called his "squinty little eyes and mastodonic nose." He also noted that "the honor has less to do with Spiro Agnew than the honor I held." About 300 guests turned up for the unveiling, including some who may really understand what the former Veep went through. Among the first to join in a standing ovation: Oregon Senator Bob Packwood.
KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY
Barbara Turner, JENNIFER JASON LEIGH'S mom, doesn't just knit her daughter sweaters. She also whips up screenplays. So when the actress proposed a script about a girl who can't sing (like Leigh) and her sister, who has a fabulous voice (as both of Leigh's do), Turner happily complied. Leigh stars in the resulting Georgia, which generated a buzz at Cannes but lacks an American distributor. The constantly risk-taking actress says she liked her tortured character for her ability "to be very naked and very out there." And hey-one Seattle scene was shot in the former apartment of Kurt Cobain's ex-drug dealer.
SEENB & HEARD
One of the more persistent Hollywood rumors has it that Keanu Reeves is secretly married to mogul David Geffen. After the July issue of Out magazine appears, someone may have to start a new rumor. The Johnny Mnemonic star daringly reveals his heterosexuality in the gay publication and is said to echo Geffen's claim that the two have never met.
Big news for Corey Feldman fans: the seemingly disappeared star of cheesy '80s teen flicks like License to Drive will be on a new cbs show this season. In Dweebs he'll play a software-company worker with byte-size social skills. The big question: Is there a part for the other member of the "two Coreys," Corey Haim?
HEY, HEY, WHERE'S THE MONKEY?
"The first time I heard the demo, I thought 'Uh-oh, the Monkees,'" says PHIL SOLEM, one-half of the pop duo the Rembrandts. He was listening to a tape of the theme song for a TV show called Friends, which he and Danny Wilde had been asked to record. But after they added their two cents to the song, he got to like it. So did a Nashville disk jockey, who put the 42-second clip from the hit show on the air. The resulting clamor convinced the heretofore subcult-following duo that they ought to add the song to their third album, LP. And now the folks from Friends, including JENNIFER ANISTON, COURTENEY COX and LISA KUDROW are helping out by pretending to play instruments for the video. Somewhere, Davey Jones is smiling.
