Hard Times for Hillary

Hillary Rodham Clinton is by all accounts a brilliant intellect and a world- class professional legal expert ((THE WHITE HOUSE, March 21)). That's why I find her self-portrayal as a victim of poor record keeping for Whitewater simply not believable. How can the Clintons expect us to trust their replanning of health care, one-seventh of the U.S. economy, if they can't properly account for a single real estate investment?

Had George and Barbara Bush been involved in something as controversial as Whitewater, the media would have been demanding the former President's head on a platter. I'm tired of the way the media give the President and his wife the benefit of the doubt. It's time for them to be held accountable.

The bashing of Hillary Clinton has a familiar ring. Eleanor Roosevelt accomplished important things for her country and was subjected to the worst kind of defamation and ridicule by her husband's enemies and those willing to lead or join the chorus. This kind of treatment is contemptible. I hope Mrs. Clinton will ignore it, as did Mrs. Roosevelt.
