For years Japan has responded to questions about wartime prostitution with icy indifference. Officials denied government involvement in what historical records clearly show -- that the Japanese military forced tens of thousands of Asian women into a vast network of government-run brothels during World War II. But in a move that reflects the country's determination to upgrade its international image, Japan finally acknowledged government complicity and hinted it would consider extending financial assistance to the surviving victims.
