Business Notes ADVERTISING

Each of the four 30-second black-and-white spots interprets a ruinous relationship from famous romance novels: a woman fondling her absent lover's belongings, a man rendered sleepless by the image of an inaccessible beauty. They all capture the essence of one emotion: obsession. When it came to updating the weird yet popular Obsession fragrance ads, Calvin Klein was reluctant to tamper with perfection. He wanted the new ads to maintain their mystique, along with an element of romance. A tall order, but Klein went to the king of weird himself, David Lynch. From his soap noir TV show, Twin Peaks, to his bizarre film Wild at Heart, Lynch's resume seemed suited to the task. Twin Peaks fans will be delighted to see that Lara Flynn Boyle and James Marshall, two of the show's principal actors, are cast in the commercials as well.
