Nathan Cummings, 88, contentious Canadian-born businessman who in 1939 took over an ailing Baltimore coffee and tea company and, through both internal growth and acquisitions, transformed it into Consolidated Foods, ranked 49th among FORTUNE 500 companies, whose brands include Sara Lee cakes and Fuller Brush; in Palm Beach, Fla.
