With 40-m.p.h. winds whipping around him and 50 Ibs. of climbing equipment on his back, Goodwin made the ascent in some 7 1/2 hrs. He hoisted himself on metal hooks that he wedged into the slots designed to hold window-washing scaffolds. When one of those scaffolds was placed in his path, Goodwin simply moved sideways, grabbing suction cups that he placed on the windows. Said he: "There was a coat of grease on the windows to keep them from getting scratched. Every time I got a cup on, it would slide after about ten seconds." Goodwin's victorious arrival at the top of the 110-story Sears building proved a bit of a comedown--he was arrested for disorderly conduct.
