Round 1
Worried about student protest, the University of California at Los Angeles last week took the unusual step of bestowing its honorary degrees (see below) in private, at a dinner guarded by university police. It took lots of pomp out of the circumstance, but such is the climate of academe this troubled spring. Among the men and women who have been honored with doctorates so far:
DICKINSON COLLEGE (Pa.)
Kingman Brewster Jr., LL.D., president of Yale University. A pioneer in the new world of educational diplomacy.
James H. Robinson, LL.D., founder and director of Operation Crossroads Africa.
FORDHAM UNIVERSITY
Terence Cardinal Cooke, LL.D., archbishop of New York.
Leontyne Price, L.H.D., opera singer.
ITHACA COLLEGE
Lorin Hollander, D.MUS., pianist. As educators grappling with the problem of communicating with young minds, we are particularly impressed by your ability to tune in on--and to turn on --those under thirty.
LOYOLA UNIVERSITY (La.)
Dr. Michael Debakey, D.SC, heart specialist.
MIAMI UNIVERSITY (Ohio)
Bob Hope, L.H.D., entertainer. You, sir, are an American institution; you strengthen our willingness as Americans to accept the responsibilities of being Americans.
Glenn T. Seaborg, LL.D., chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.
SKIDMORE COLLEGE
Helen Frankenthaler, L.H.D., painter.
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT LOS ANGELES
Dorothy B. Chandler, L.H.D., patron of the arts and former California regent.
Robert H. Finch, LL.D., Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare.
Daniel P. Moynihan, LL.D., special assistant to President Nixon.
Artur Rubinstein, D.F.A., pianist.
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
John S. Knight, LL.D., newspaper publisher.
UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
Lady Barbara Ward Jackson, LL.D., economist. She has taught her admirers and students that realities are not as dangerous as fancies and that true independence and genuine accomplishment stem from hard facts bravely met.
Dr. Marshall W. Nirenberg, SC.D., Nobel prizewinning biochemist.
UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH
Frank Borman, D.ENG., astronaut.
Henry A. Kissinger, LL.D., special assistant to President Nixon. A brilliant, articulate and remarkably productive scholar, and a distinguished public servant devoted to world peace and security.
