Sam Pan
A maverick of a somewhat different hue also spoke his piece last week. Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty, a Democrat so selective in his party loyalties that he sometimes aids Republicans, went to the National Press Club in Washington to belittle a Republican whom he has assisted in the past. His target was California Governor Ronald Reagan, whom Yorty helped elect last year, first by running against Democratic Incumbent Edmund Brown in the Democratic primary and then by refusing to support Brown in the general election. But, said Yorty, Reagan "got carried away" by his election and is "running for President too soon." Premature as Reagan may be, he would get Yorty's support for President if Senator Robert Kennedy were the Democratic candidate. Said Yorty: "I can't think of anyone I wouldn't support against Bobby."
