Border Meeting
President Dwight Eisenhower and Mexico's new President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines have certain things in common. Like Ike. Mexico's new leader served his country under preceding administrations. Like Ike, he has undertaken in office to clean up the mess left by them. Last week the summer White House in Denver announced that President Eisenhower and Mexico's cleanup President will meet at the international border Oct. 19. The occasion: dedication of the largest joint U.S.-Mexican border undertaking on record--the $50,000,000 Falcon Dam across the Rio Grande River 75 miles downstream from Laredo, Texas.
A meeting between the two Presidents was first proposed by Vice President Nixon (TIME, June 15), who suggested the idea to President Ruiz Cortines when he flew south to represent Ike at the Mexican President's inaugural last December. After Nixon also got President Eisenhower's assent, the State Department and Mexican Foreign Office fixed on Falcon's dedication as the best time and place.
