P: John E. Nelson, 50, vice president of J. J. Newberry Co., the fourth largest U.S. chain of variety stores (477 stores in 45 states),* stepped up to the presidency, succeeding E. A. Newberry, 67, brother of Founder and Chairman J. J. Newberry, 75, who became vice chairman and chairman of the executive committee. Nelson got his start in 1921 as a stock boy with Brittan Bros., a Pacific Northwest variety chain later purchased by Newberry.
