No New Models?
Before the war, Detroit's hustling automakers liked to bring out next year's models this year. But now, things may be different. Last week Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, Packard and Hudson, which had planned to bring out 1947 models this fall, decided to hold off until 1947. Having turned out only 250,000 cars in nine strike-pocked months, most of the motormakers thought it smarter to keep on producing for the car-hungry market rather than close down to retool.
They may be forced back into their old habit. Studebaker and Willys-Overland still plan new models this autumn. If those new shapes catch the public eye, or if Kaiser-Frazer Corp. (advertising its unproduced cars as 1947 models) gets into mass production, then the others may willy-nilly follow suit.
