Refusals Refused
Colombia's new-dealing President Alfonso LOpez is respected throughout South America as a statesman of vision and intelligence. But the exuberance of Colombian politics sometimes unnerves him. At such times he offers the Senate his resignation. LOpez has offered to resign because of 1) a political scandal following the murder of "Mamatoco" (an obscure Negro boxer), 2) a division in the ranks of his political supporters, 3) his wife's illness, 4) Colombia's humid political atmosphere. In the past two years the Senate has consistently refused his resignations.
Following a series of ten conspiracies against his Government, President LOpez offered his resignation again last fortnight.
Last week the Colombian Congress selected an interim President, young (39) newsman-diplomat Alberto Lleras Camargo. For this week LOpez meant to resign for good. He would refuse to accept another Senate refusal to accept his resignation.
