The McNutt go-ahead was an order "unfreezing" all bona fide ball players from their off-season war jobs. Applying mainly to 100-odd 4-Fs reluctant to leave war plants for fear they might be reclassified, it gives baseball some badly needed manpower and the psychological shove it needs. Greying National League President Ford Frick said cheerfully: "The use of these players should enable us to go through the season in good shape."
