For days, while the Marines tried to get set for a shot at him, he popped out of Bloody Nose's honeycomb of Jap-dug caverns, fired and disappeared. While hunters searched he would skitter through tunnels, pop out of another opening and fire again. He had killed 87 Marines, all of them with a shot through the head.

In the end, the Marines finally had every cave on the ridge covered. They waited. When the Gopher popped out this time, a Marine marksman got him--through the head.
