Cover over the Junk
The Government is going to pile part of its vast stocks of surplus war materials up neatly in open spaces, throw a framework of wood or steel around the piles and then bolt corrugated sheet metal around the frames.
By shipping the warehouse units to areas where surpluses exist, rather than by shipping the surpluses to central warehouses, ODT will save transportation, and will keep stocks of surplus goods where prospective buyers may examine the merchandise. Last week the Government had experimental prefabricated warehouse units set up. Before it is through, it will need 100,000,000 sq. ft. of storage space, hopes that the cost will not exceed $1 a sq. ft.
When the portable warehouses are no longer needed, they can be knocked down and sold in small units to farmers et al., thus preventing the warehouses for surpluses from becoming surplus warehouses.
