Truck Terminal
Two-thirds of all the merchandise freight that enters and leaves Manhattan is carried by trucks. After studying this amazing statistic, and pondering the truck-jammed, gasoline-smelling streets of Manhattan, the Port of New York Authority announced plans for a $2,500,000 Union Motor Truck Terminal.
The Terminal, covering a solid city block, will be built near the Manhattan end of the Holland Tunnel as soon as construction materials are available. It will be designed to handle as much as 2,000 tons of cargo a day. Two important advantages : 1) quick interchange of freight between over-the-road trucks and local delivery; 2) a wide, flat roof capable of parking 128 truck-trailers that otherwise would block narrow city streets between trips.
