Between Generals
To the Allies, moving slowly toward unanimous recognition of the Committee of Liberation at Algiers, the French last week made plain their own unity. Wrote Henri Giraud to Charles de Gaulle:
Mon General,
There are no longer two armies; there is the French Army. You have recognized me as commander. For this I thank you. . . .
Together we shall discover that we have never ceased to be true soldiers of France. I ask that your followers keep their admiration and affection for you but that they accord me . . . confidence and devotion. . . .
To the future in liberated Metz, Very cordially yours, H. Giraud
Replied Charles de Gaulle:
Mon cher General,
Your letter touches me deeply. It will also deeply affect the Free French forces. . . .
The Committee of Liberation has given you command of all the forces at our disposal. I am sure they will follow you with the confidence and devotion deserved by the great soldier and the great leader you are. . . .
In friendship, De Gaulle
