Roosevelt Epic

The Yugoslavs who for centuries have chanted endless epic ballads about their heroes now have new heroes and new epics.

Draja Mihailovich's Chetniks now have a song that describes a heroic drinking bout between Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. After downing oceans of red wine they decide to send a message of hope to Douglas MacArthur.

Another song is about two heroes riding their chargers triumphantly through the Bosnian mountains. Sample stanzas:

Mountain speaks to mountain:

Why are you, mountain, full of shade?

Why are you silent today?

Did you not see who rode through you?

They are neither wedding guests nor

rich people,

But two brave comrades: Mihailovich the gallant knight, And, next to him, none other than

Roosevelt.

They are riding two black steeds, And are afraid of no one. . ..

Then Mihailovich speaks to Roosevelt: Listen to me, comrade: Who cares for your cattle at home? Who looks after your vineyards?

And Roosevelt replies:

Hush! Be still, brave knight.

The cattle are perishing from lack of care;

The vineyards are neglected. But four sons I've raised, on sugar and

silk. All four I've sent to the four corners of

the world,

To fight the four czars. God will grant that they crush them. . . .
