Dupe Cure for Dopes
The war is probably the best thing that ever happened to U.S. drug addicts. By shutting off the sources, chiefly Asiatic, of smuggled dope (morphine, heroin, opium and derivatives), the war in Asia has for several years been cutting into the illicit drug traffic at a rate U.S. preventive agencies never hoped-to achieve. The result, says the annual report of the U.S. Commissioner of Narcotics, is that drug addiction has reached an all-time low because many drug addicts (there are an estimated 45,000 in the U.S.) have been forced to take cures.
Others are taking an involuntary cure. Reason: Due to the dope shortage, dope adulteration in the last few years has reached a point where most of the heroin peddled in the U.S. is 98% milk sugar. This ersatz heroin is slowly working a cure on many drug addicts without their knowing it.
