Private Bushface Goes to Town
It took the draft to drag 30-year-old Carlton N. Krause from his home at Ogdensburg, Wis. (pop. 207). Before last spring Homebody Krause had never wandered far from his dairy farm, the woods, the tools he used to bore his own gun barrels. Only once had he seen the State's metropolis, Milwaukee, 115 miles from home.
At Camp Wolters, near Mineral Wells, Tex. (pop. 6,303), where he was nicknamed "Bushface" (because of the mustache he took to camp), he still kept his homebody habits. Few weeks ago Mineral Wells's Chamber of Commerce, proud of its friendliness to men in khaki, heard with chagrin that Private Bushface Krause, alone among his fellows, had never thought it worth-while to spend 10-c-, ride three miles to town.
Last week Mineral Wells's publicity-wise Chamber of Commerce with Army help got Private Bushface to town. It took a proclamation by the Mayor ("Private Krause Day") to do it. Lugging a key to the city with enormous modesty, Private Bushface toured the town with pretty girls, was honor guest at dinner, a dance and a rodeo. Toward midnight the garlands were dead and he prepared to depart. Said he to Chamber of Commerce Manager Paul Ord: "I might come again some time."
