Patriotic Sheboygan
Sheboygan, Wis. (pop. 40,000) makes cheese and chairs, has a large German-born and German-descended citizenry. Last week Sheboygan loudly joined in the fanfare of patriotism which U. S. music is blaring (TIME, July 8). Its city council voted that every concert played in Sheboygan shall open with America, close the first half with The Stars and Stripes Forever, open the second half with God Bless America,*; wind up with The Star-Spangled Banner.
* Irving Berlin wrote this song for Kate Smith in 1938. Last week he assigned its royalties--$43,646 to date --to patriotic causes to be selected by Gene Tunney, Herbert Bayard Swope, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt. As a starter they picked the Boy and Girl Scouts.
