Apology
PRESS
The Huntsville, Ala. Mercury ("The Community Builder") announced:
"The report in this paper last week on the death of Gil Jones was hurriedly written and some errors crept into it which the Mercury cheerfully corrects.
"The Mercury said Gil Jones and his name was Gilbert and that his age was 93 and it was only 39. His wife's name was printed as Hannah and Susannah was correct.
"That he had two sons and both the boys were girls--and that he lived at Madison Cross Roads and it was Owens Cross Roads; that he left many friends that mourned his death.
"Now that that is over this paper does not propose to be browbeaten any more for 'dern' his hide not even his family are mourning his death--they are all glad the mean old cuss has gone and where he has gone the Editor of this paper hopes he will not have to go."
Co-publisher R. L. O'Neal neglected to explain in print that he concocted the apology from his imagination in protest against picayunish criticism of newspaper errors.
