Out of Gas

With the possible exception of a hitchhiking honeybee, the most exasperating thing in any motorist's life is to run out of gas. Last week President Coleman W. Roberts of the Carolina Motor Club reported that a survey of American Automobile Association garages showed that about 1,500,000 U. S. motorists ran out of gas on the road last year. This was half again as many as in 1935. Said Mr. Roberts: "The surprising thing about this record is that there are some 325,000 retail gasoline outlets in the nation, or approximately one for every mile of surfaced highway in the State systems, and every modern-day car is equipped with a gauge."
