White Aims

With the Radical Madrid Cabinet's spokesmen proposing last week to set up, in case of victory, something between a Socialist republic and an out-and-out Communist dictatorship in Spain, the aims of the opposing White armies were stated at Seville by Generalissimo Francisco Franco: "What are the main objects of our Revolution? These consist in the establishment of a military dictatorship to last as long as is necessary to restore order and national economy-- respect of life and property--governmental authority and the religion that is traditional in Spain.

"We shall respect all social laws and promulgate others that will promote social progress and bring the full benefits of civilization within the reach of every Spaniard. I intend to regain the prestige of Spain as a nation. I think that a military dictatorship will mean the co-operation of all sections of national life. We shall entrust efficient technical men with the administration, not politicians. My reorganization of the State will be based on a corporate system resembling Italy and Germany, preserving, however, traditional Spanish characteristics. My agreement with General Mola and the other leaders of the Revolution provided that the Revolution was not against the Republican regime, but aimed only to nationalize the Republic and to form a strong nation."

In Burgos, where General Mola has his headquarters, arrived the Spanish Catholic Party Leader Jose Maria Gil Robles, one of the main organizers of the Revolution against what he takes to be Marxism in Madrid and Anarchism in Barcelona. After conferring with General Mola he emerged to sound this 100% Catholic keynote: "I am with Spain, and Spain is here!"
