Great, Heroic, Sacred Hate

After rebuffing President Roosevelt when he protested the recent Moscow congress of adult Communists of all nations (TIME, July 29 et seq.), Soviet leaders last week welcomed teen-age Communists of all nations to a similar junior Comintern Congress for fomenting the same old "World Revolution of the World Proletariat."

Again violated was the Soviet Governrment's formal pledge, delivered at the White House by Foreign Commissar Litvinoff, not to allow on Russian soil groups engaged in attempting to overthrow the U. S. Government. Last week Attempter Gil Green, Secretary of the Young Communist League of America, was elected with two other U. S. Reds to the Congress Presidium of which Joseph Stalin is an honorary member.

Work done by the Junior Reds last week consisted chiefly of planning nonpartisan youth organizations in all countries which would exert themselves against the Fascists of Italy and Germany, teaming up for this purpose with junior pinks and Christian Sunday-School youths wherever possible in the name of Peace. Few days earlier Komsomohkaya Pravda, Moscow's newsorgan of Communist Youth, sounded a characteristic, un-Christian blast.

"Among the noble qualities of the Soviet citizen is class hatred," cried Komsomolskaya Pravda. "It is a sage and profound feeling of organic hatred toward the enemy--toward all the filthy, abominable remnants of the old world, its wolfish laws and fetid life. . . . Irreconcilable, inflexible, untamable hate should be nourished by every worker, by every collective farm worker, by every soldier and office employe, by every teacher and artist, because this hate is a great, heroic, sacred hate which belongs to the proletariat."
