Presbyterian Decline

For all their zeal and all their drives, ministers of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. got only 65,147 new communicants in the year ending last March 31--31,822 fewer than the year before. The Presbyterian membership list stood at 1,959,923, a decline of 27,368 communicants. All this was reported last week by the church's Stated Clerk, Rev. Dr. Lewis Seymour Mudge.

Reasons for the decline in membership, said Dr. Mudge, were that 9,504 Siamese Presbyterians were transferred from the Synod of New York to the new National Christian Church of Siam; 70,693 Presbyterians were placed on the inactive or suspended list; the rolls were closed for the year before Easter when numerous new members are generally received.
