Sanctuary
S P O R T
In Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, California and elsewhere, sportsmen who hunt with bow & arrow have long had their own game preserves, where no guns are allowed. Last week the Oregon State legislature set aside the biggest bow & arrow sanctuary in the U.S.--the Canyon Creek Preserve, 200 sq. mi. near the centre of the State, where cougar, grizzlies, deer and small game abound.
Increasingly popular, big game hunting with bow & arrow has thrived in Oregon for years. Bowmen like the late "Art" Young used to go there for mountain lion, bear. Cassius Styles makes his famed bows, best in the U. S., of Oregon yew. Famed Oregon archers are: Homer Prouty, who has shot an arrow 466 yd. (a record) ; Dr. George Cathey, acting president of the National Broad Arrow Association, whose Oregon Chapter sponsored last week's bill. Dr. Cathey's greatest feat: killing two bears with broad arrows (hunting arrows with razor tips three inches long, one inch wide), one arrow to each bear, each of which fell dead within six feet.
