Start on Ice

After a summer which, for the nine teams in the National Hockey League, has been the busiest in ten years, hockey followers saw the new season start in three cities last week.

Rules. Major rule change this year is a penalty shot, from a circle 38 ft. from the goal, awarded to a team when the referee finds its opponents guilty of tripping or otherwise fouling a player in on the goal. Long part of the game on the Pacific Coast, it replaces the National League regulation whereby, for the same offense, the guilty player went to the sidelines for five minutes.

Players. Winners of the Stanley Cup last year, the Chicago Black Hawks suffered a blow when their star goalie, Charles ("Chuck") Gardiner, died of a brain tumor last summer. To bolster their scoring attack, the Black Hawks traded Defenseman Lionel Conacher for speedy Forward Howie Morenz of the Montreal Canadiens. Irvin ("Ace") Bailey, Toronto Maple Leaf star who was nearly killed in a game early last season, was still unfit for play last week. The New York Rangers had a crop of new forwards, one of whom is Manager Lester Patrick's Son Lynn, making his professional debut. In Boston, Lester Patrick's Brother Frank, with a new job as manager, planned to make a star of a Ranger castoff, hulking Jean Pusie. In St. Louis a new team called the Eagles, but actually the old Ottawa Senators who were as weak on ice as they were at the box office last season, was threatened by a suit for $200,000 for trespassing in a district already covered by a minor-league franchise.

Games. In their first appearance, the St. Louis Eagles lost, 3-10-1, but only after the Chicago Black Hawks made two goals in the last five minutes. In their second, they beat the Rangers, 4-to-2. The Toronto Maple Leafs beat Boston in their opener, 5-to-3, and two nights later nosed out the Canadiens, 2-to-1. The Detroit Red Wings used a new goalie, Normie Smith, lost their opening game to Boston, 4-to-2.
