Pope to the Hills
Since he became Pope twelve years ago, Pius XI has never spent a night away from his chambers in the Vatican, third floor front. He has left Vatican City only half a dozen times since he gained his freedom by the Lateran Treaties in 1929. Last week it was announced that the Pope would presently leave for a two-month holiday in the Barberine Palace at Castel Gandolfo in the cool Alban Hills, 17 miles from Rome. There he will hold regular audiences, stroll through his vineyards and gardens, admire his cows in their spotless stalls, his chickens in their gayly decorated little coops.
