Wise Decision

In Caldwell, N. J., the members of the First Presbyterian Church met to decide what to do with their benevolence budget of $5,500. By a vote that was three less than unanimous, they decided to discontinue their annual contribution of $250 to the New Jersey Anti-Saloon League. "The League," they said, "is no longer a charitable organization. . . ."

Commented the New York Herald Tribune: "A wise decision. . . . Many thoughtful ministers and laymen have expressed the belief of late that in supporting the dry and other sumptuary causes, the churches have compromised their moral appeal; that if one would persuade the spirit he should not at the same time threaten the body. . . ."
