COMMONWEALTH British Commonwealth of Nations
COMMONWEALTH (British Commonwealth of Nations)
Reputedly the cabinet approved in camera last week for early submission to Parliament, a bill providing that in a three-cornered contest for a parliamentary seat wherein no candidate has an absolute majority the re-vote shall be only on the two leaders in the original polling.
Thus in the very frequent instance of a Conservative and a Laborite completely outdistancing a Liberal, the re-vote would be between the Conservative and the Laborite only. Since the followers of the dropped Liberal would then be more likely to swing to the Conservative than to the Laborite, it is to the advantage of the present Conservative Government to get the bill through.
