Segrave, one-time British aviator, braced himself behind the wheel of a 24-cylinder, 1,000-h.p., 4-ton automobile of British make (Sunbeam); zipped along the tide-smoothed sand at Daytona Beach, Fla.; set a new record for the straightaway mile, 203.792 mi. per hour. Task completed, Major Segrave dismounted to receive prompt recognition from onlooker John D. Rockefeller Sr., in the shape of four shiny new dimes.
