Wine
Felix Grange, outstanding European billiardist, journeyed to the U. S.; entered the world's 18.2 balkline tournament in Washington, D. C. Last week, while practicing, he threw his cue aside in disgust.
"How," stormed M. Grange, "can anyone play billiards on ice water? I want wine, one small bottle with my meals. With wine I could cut in half the odds against me."
The Frenchman was an extreme outsider at the time, his chance for the title being considered a 30-to-1 shot. Subsequently and presumably without wine he provided the tournament with its sensation by winning his match from Willie Hoppe, defending champion, 400 to 384.
