Unlucky 13th

Dictator-President Theodore Pangalos has strutted as the autocrat of Greece for 13 months (TIME, July 6, 1925, et seq.). Last week, imprudent, he allowed himself the luxury of quitting Athens for a short vacation on the Island of Spetsae.

Straightway General Kondylis

(TIME, March 1) a no more and no less notorious adventurer than Dictator Pangalos, sprang a bloodless coup d' etat at Athens, telegraphed an order for the President's arrest to Spetsae. Resourceful, President Pangalos hurried aboard the destroyer Pergamos, sought to escape to a foreign port. Unlucky, he found the Pergamos short of coal.

After a few hours of futile steaming the Pergamos was overtaken by the battleship Leon. Dictator Pangalos, formally arrested, was held in custody, informed that General Kondylis had "recalled" Admiral Koundouriotis to the Presidency of the Hellenic Republic. Next day, Athens crowds roared delight, mocked their one-time hero.
