Roads

The Department of Agriculture announced the probable expenditure on roads in the U. S. for 1926. Local authorities are expected to spend $431,000,000. State highway departments are expected to spend $598,000,000 (of which $118,000,000 is to come as contributions from the Federal Government). The total expenditure of slightly over a billion dollars will provide 6,751 miles of asphalt, concrete and brick roads, 14,320 miles of sand-clay, gravel and macadam, and 8,145 miles of improved dirt road--and maintenance of 234,582 miles of roadway.
