New World's Records
Mile Run. From Stockholm Stadium, Sweden, came the report that Paavo Nurmi, a Finn, had " broken the world's record for the mile run." The mile record--with the possible exception of the 100-yard record--is looked upon as the most important record in track competition. Yet Nurmi's feat (though it was in no wise questioned) evoked little or no press comment; no American sporting editor proved energetic enough to cable for further details. The Finn's time was given as 4 min. 102/5 sec. He also "broke the world's record for 1,500 meters." (Time, 3 min. 53 sec.)
