Bryan vs Chi Tribune

The Chicago Tribune made fun of William Jennings Bryan's utterances on evolution. Thereupon Mr. Bryan wrote a 3,000-word letter to the Tribune saying that he had been treated unfairly. The Tribune published the letter in full. Mr. Bryan wrote that his opinion was the same as that of the Presbyterians and Southern Baptists--that if the Tribune made fun of his views, it was ridiculing Christianity.

Next day the Tribune replied: "Mr. Bryan says we misrepresented him We'd regret that if it were true, but it isn't"--going on to accuse Mr. Bryan of using "the favorite trick of the political dialectician" and ending with the remark: "We are not quarreling with Mr. Bryan because he believes or disbelieves but because he wants laws to make other people do and think as he does."
